Following up on Metel Ma Shelta, meet Lama Shehadeh, one of the three designers behind this brilliant campaign which has now made the local news.

If you have been hibernating in some faraway cave or accidentally slipped in a coma for the past few days, allow me to assist you and get you up to speed. To learn more about the campaign, how it came to life, what is to be expected and get to know Lama's two best friends and Metel Ma Shelta co-creators, jump to Cleaning Up Our Streets... And Minds.

And now finally, introducing Lama Shehadeh, a graphic design student also minoring in business administration at the American University of Beirut. Growing up, she was immersed in the world of visual arts and from an early age she knew she would become a designer one day.

"I come from a family that has an insight on arts. Both my parents are architects and my mom draws with coal and chalk."

What drove you to study graphic design?
I just had it in me ever since I was 6. Whenever I had a group project I wanted to be the one who's responsible for the design part. I took a personality test when I was 15 and since then I knew that I was meant to become a graphic designer.

Who is your favorite designer or visual artist?
Stefan Sagmeister.

Where do you get inspired for your projects?
Basically it's design books. I usually flip through and random things that are happening with design can sometimes inspire me to create something new.

What is your most inspired project? Why do you consider it to be your favorite?
I think it is a book jacket I did for the story "Alice in Wonderland". I created the illusion of hole inside the book. I had to cut every page, it was like a stack of 70 sheets. I also had to come up with techniques to make it look deeper. I put a lot of effort and thought to it.

What areas of design interest you the most? Print? Multimedia? Etc. and why?
I lean more towards print (Corporate Identity and Publication). Print is so precious to me. I enjoy doing it, thinking about it, and applying it. What smells better than a book? A book that you got to design yourself.

What in your opinions are your best qualities as a designer?
I would like to think it is originality and the ability to respond well to criticism.

Your worst?
Not enough patience.

If you hadn't been a designer, what profession would you have chosen?
Architecture.

If you were stranded on a desert island with only one item, what would it be?
My phone.

What design softwares you cannot possibly survive without?
Adobe Illustrator.

Are you a MAC or a PC and why?
MAC it's really practical.

If you were a font, which would you be and why?
Helvetica Neue. It's elegant and clear. It also comes with a variety of weights (light, ultra light, bold…)

Outside of design and visual arts, what are your hobbies?
Swimming and traveling.

You are one of the creators behind the Metel Ma Shelta campaign. Why do you feel it is important for you, as a designer, to use your professional skills for social work?
Sometimes we might all have the urge to change and tackle certain social issues. As designers we learn to come up with original ideas that draw attention. It also teaches us the right way to communicate with our audience in order to achieve maximum effectiveness.

Metel Ma Shelta has allowed you to meet your audience up close and personal. How does it feel having your work touch your audience directly and be part of this direct interaction? Do you enjoy it or do you prefer the creative side of your work, when it is just you and your computer?
Of course I'd prefer the interaction especially when it comes to awareness campaigns because the whole point is to affect your audience.

How do you think this campaign changed you as a designer? Did all the exposure you got affect the way you plan to pursue your career? Did you learn new skills and qualities about yourself which you would like to focus on?
This campaign gave me a huge responsibility as a designer. Now that we've set certain goals in this campaign we can not stop here. This has inspired me to pursue this type of campaigns throughout my career instead of being purely corporate. Of course now that it is more interactive I would have to focus more on social skills.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I would want to open my own design studio. Hopefully I would've launched by then (or be a part of) a campaign that works on achieving women's rights in Lebanon and the Arab World.

Cleaning up our streets... and minds

Social, environmental, political, you name it; there have been campaigns of any form and shape, all over the place these past few years.

Some popular, some less. Some effective, some not as much. Others, unfortunately and despite the best of intentions, got twisted and turned into jokes. Very popular ones. But jokes nonetheless as Brofessional Review rightfully noted, such as the whole "Shu we2fet 3layeh" campaign by Bank Med (here, here and here) parodied so many times (here is one of those times) or even "Cheyef 7alak". These are only two of so many issues tackled in the media to raise awareness on various subjects including driving and road safety, women's rights, children's rights, racism and even tourism with the now notorious "Don't Vote For Me, Vote For Jeita Grotto" tag line.

In any case, the purpose of this post is not to assess these awareness campaigns, but just to note that successful or not, these were led by organized activists, NGOs, private companies, or even the government.

But I have to say, I have not seen any campaign launched by unknown, independent students go viral as quickly as Metel Ma Shelta (متل ما شلتا)!

Please, understand, it was not the work of a university department, a club or even a class project. It was this idea that three young people started, and which unravelled into a nation-wide phenomenon! Well, nation-wide on social media so far.

But Metel Ma Shelta (متل ما شلتا) could take the whole country, if not the whole Arab world by storm. At least this is what Mohamed Olaymi, Nadine Razzouk and Lama Shehadeh hope for.

These three best friends are the brains behind Metel Ma Shelta (متل ما شلتا). We had a little chat with Mohamed and Nadine as they let us in on everything, and a tad more.

It all starts in Beirut, where these students study and live.

Meet Mohamed Olaymi, a third year graphic design student at the American University of Beirut. Born and raised in Riyadh, this Syrian national then moved to Lebanon to pursue his education at the AUB. Originally from a "business oriented family" as he says, he considers himself to be the "odd artist in this equation", however clarifying his family is "very supportive" of what he does and remains his "biggest fans".

His best friend and classmate at AUB is Nadine Razzouk. This middle child has "no history of artists or designers in the family" either, and just like Mohamed, somehow, she ended up studying graphic design at one of the most prominent universities in the region.

So how did they come up with this unusual campaign?

"As we were strolling along the streets of Hamra we have encountered people littering. This came as a shock to us, in a beautiful country such as Lebanon that is considered to be the citadel of modernism in the Middle East, to still encounter such mess" explains Mohamed. "We perceive that as a horrific crime and our objective is to spread awareness throughout Lebanon and to initiate a law that prohibits people from littering. We're hoping the government can take a serious look at this problem and design a solution for it" he adds.

"Our main objective is for people to think twice before littering again" continues Nadine; "on the long term, our campaign's goal is for a law to be implemented to fine people who litter".

Needless to say, these young activists are strong-minded and very determined to see their campaign succeed.

Their plan was simple: They "didn't want to print papers and stick them all over the streets because we knew people have become immune to this type of campaigning" explains Mohamed, "nor did we want to distribute flyers which will eventually be trashed. We wanted to bring something new to the table, something no one can turn his head away from. It hit us like a lightning bolt, MONEY!".

Both agree that interactive campaigns which engage their audience directly in an active form are more effective. "We wanted to raise awareness about littering but we wanted our campaign to be different in the sense that it tackles the lebanese citizen on a microlevel. The person is interacting with our campaign so we are hoping it triggers something in each one of us" notes Nadine.

Mohamed proceeds to clarify how Metel Ma Shelta (متل ما شلتا) goes that extra mile: "Distributing phony money on the street was the perfect solution. It requires the target to bend down, pick it up, flip it, and read it. All this probably takes 30 seconds. Most awareness campaigns lose their audience after 5 seconds, we're being able to captivate them for approximately 30 seconds which is an achievement on its own!"

The concept is quite simple really; a fake 10,000 Lebanese Pounds bill with a note on the back: "Just like you picked up this money, you can pick up garbage on the street".

But fake money costs real money and it came as no surprise that Mohamed, Nadine and Lama were financing and executing this project themselves, with the help of their families.

Apparently, it was all worth it since faculty and peers at AUB, as well as relatives "were all ecstatic to hear we were doing something this genuine" reveals Mohamed.

"After we had printed our first 100 copies, we wanted to ask our peers and friends and of course our teachers about it so we tried it in our department at AUB and it caught everyone's attention. Everyone has been so supportive! We are truly thankful because if it weren't for their excitement we probably wouldn't have gotten this much attention" continues Nadine.

The campaign went viral in a matter of days, and the three friends are still "in a state of shock". They did not expect such a massive reaction from the public and of course, they are hoping to keep the momentum going until a law is drafted. "We hope that with the help of the media we can get our politicians to finally implement this law against littering" says Nadine.

Their enthusiasm is utterly contagious and they plan to tackle other issues close to their hearts once this one comes to term.

So what is next?

Beirut was the first city targeted simply because it is where they live and spend most of their time but these tenacious designers have already reached Tripoli, Bhamdoun and Kaslik, and they hope to cover the entire Lebanese territory soon. Mohamed even plans to cross the border and export this campaign to Syria as well.

Usually when a movement becomes that popular among students, it catches on quickly in other countries and when asked if they had plans to collaborate with students abroad and expand the campaign's outreach, both were open to the idea.

So can we expect money-rain to pour on all Arab streets soon? Who knows.

In the meantime, "it's raining cash over Beirut City" laughs Mohamed. "Most of the reactions were extremely positive and encouraging. A few critics have exclaimed that we are littering by distributing flyers on the floor. We respond: We have created a campaign that is attractive enough to be surely picked off the floor. We're not worried about that at all! We never find our flyers on the floor, they're picked up seconds after we distribute them. Some decide to throw them in the trash. Many decide to keep them and distribute them in another street, and a few place them back on the ground for someone else to stumble upon them. We're currently putting a video together that sums up the different reactions we have encountered. So stay tuned for that".

"Some other critics said 'we're not obliged to remove the trash off the street, we should promote not throwing it in the first place'. Our reply is that not only do we mean to literally pick up the trash, but also symbolically. We ask people to obliterate the trash through spreading awareness".

Nadine goes on to explain that they "have studied the campaign and know that it is strong enough for it to not be ignored so the flyers are not staying on the floor".

So who are these young creators, really?

We took them on a one-on-one interview, just to pick their brains a little.

What drove you to study graphic design?
I always had a passion towards arts, I'm a painter myself, and I realized graphic design integrates so many forms of art that I intended to explore. I also wanted to master the art of visual expression.

Do you have any mentors (professors or others) and did they influence you in any way when you came up with this campaign?
Of course, almost every teacher has put us one step closer to this campaign. I would like to add that in AUB a course is given, "design in the community", as part of the graphic design program in order to teach students how to create awareness campaigns. So every little angle of our campaign is actually planned thoroughly and not coincidentally.

Who is your favorite designer or visual artist?
Andy Warhol.

Where do you get inspired for your projects?
We were actually inspired by the streets of Hamra.

If you hadn't been a designer, what profession would you have chosen?
Painter.

If you were stranded on a desert island with only one item, what would it be?
My phone.

What design softwares you cannot possibly survive without?
Adobe Photoshop.

Are you a MAC or a PC?
MAC, it understands my language.

Outside of design and visual arts, what are your hobbies?

So you do realize you guys are becoming more and more famous now. Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

In 10 years I'm hoping to be an established designer that changes the world. And of course, Hollywood. (laughs)

I was actually a psychology student but i didn't find myself there. i wanted something where i could interact with people and not just on a personal level.

Do you have any mentors (professors or others) and did they influence you in any way when you came up with this campaign?
Our teachers were so supportive, and if it weren't for their constructive feedback throughout this campaign and our courses we wouldn't have made this much of an impact.

Who is your favorite designer or visual artist?
Man Ray.

Where do you get inspired for your projects?

I usually go to bookstores on Saturdays and just lurk there and flip through books.

If you hadn't been a designer, what profession would you have chosen?

I would probably be a psychologist.

If you were stranded on a desert island with only one item, what would it be?

My laptop.

What design softwares you cannot possibly survive without?

Adobe Illustrator.

MAC, it's so much practical.

TOMORROW, RAIN OR SHINE

Rain or shine, we will be marching for Human Rights, for Women's Rights and for Lebanon. Will you be there?

I will not go through all the reasons why again. I believe I have covered most of what was close to my heart in my previous post.

One Week To Go

Nasawiya is calling on all citizens to take the streets this Saturday January 14, 2012 and appeal for the reform of Lebanese Rape Laws, and Marital Rape Laws in particular.

The meeting point will be the Ministry of Interior in Beirut (near Sanayeh Park). The March will start at 12:00 PM all the way to the Parliament Building in Nejmeh Square.

It would not be the first time responsible citizens, activists and Human Rights supporters mobilize for change in Lebanon.

Some commenters on Facebook have hinted that such protests have proven to be useless in the past and do not lead to practical reforms. That may be true at this point in time. The government may keep turning a deaf ear to our demands. And it is probably what those in power want. Keep ignoring us until we get tired of ever asking for anything.

However, it is no excuse to just sit idly and wait. Wait for what? For whom? If we do not take charge and try to instigate change in some way, who will?

By sitting on the sidelines, we would be effectively saying "that is not an important issue and we do not care" and more tragically, we would be in actuality revoking any right we have to object or even nag about that matter now or in the future.

Taking a stand is the first step towards actual actions and change.

If enough people can clearly demonstrate their demands, then it will be much harder for any authority to ignore those demands. And by extension, to remain a legitimate authority. Those in power, whom we have elected, have a duty to listen to what we say and to implement the will of the majority.

And we must grab any opportunity, such as January 14 to show them we are indeed a majority.

Women Rights are sometimes misunderstood as solely a feminist fight, instigated for and by women. That could not be farther from the truth. Feminist groups may sometimes be the leading forces behind such protests but they are not the only ones concerned with such issues. And feminism is not solely reserved for women either.

Women Rights, just like Children Rights, Migrants Rights and any other basic Human Rights concern mankind as a whole.

They are rights, but also duties, for all, equally.

That is why responsible Lebanese men must also join this cause.

Our culture has been favoring an image of masculinity which is based on the subjugation of women. It is (mis)understood that men can only express their virility and manhood by overpowering women.

That is of course a cruel myth and real men can and must stand against violence in all its forms and express and even empower their selves through respect which is not the same as fear.

Men who do not care to take a stand against rape may not be rapists, may not even be violent, but they would be silently (and even though indirectly) condoning sexual violence. It is as simple as that.

Instead, the entire population should initiate a new culture, one that is built on equality and respect.

A culture that teaches our young daughters, our sisters, our mothers even, that they are entitled to freedom and most importantly safety. Intellectual, spiritual and physical freedom and safety.

We should educate them to understand that violence in any form is unacceptable, ever, and that there could never be any valid reason to defend or excuse abuse. That silence is violence. And that each and every one of us has the duty to fight for these values.

A woman is not the private property of her father, brother, husband or son. Just like a man is no one else's property.

Freedom and safety. To be. For all.

Old stereotypes that facilitate and even encourage violence must be broken.

Violence, sexual or otherwise, can happen to anyone and both men and woman can be victims of abuse.

And because most offenders are men, they must play an even bigger role in breaking such stereotypes and vicious cycles both by actively taking part in the education of those around them but also by getting involved in political and social protests to defend what is right.

They must not only agree to never commit such violence but also never accept, condone or stay silent about it either. And of course, it is their responsibility to show, prove and challenge other men to recognize that power is not a result of oppression and fear.

As a woman, as the mother of a one-year old daughter, as the mother-to-be of a son who will join us in a few months, I cannot but be concerned.

My daughter cannot ever think it is OK for a woman to be inferior and submissive to a man. My son cannot ever think it is OK to subjugate or overpower women.

They must learn they are both equal under my roof. And under the law. Provided this law is indeed equal to both of them. That is all I can ask for. Pride and honor for all my children.

So it is not only for us we are taking a stand. It is for the generations to come. So that one day, they do not end up looking at us in shame, asking why and how we let this happen.

In a nutshell, by joining the March on Saturday, you will be participating in building a small but significant part for a unified, fair nation.

2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, What's the difference?

As I lingered on Facebook, Twitter and the blogosphere last night, the scene of a Turkish soap appeared on the TV screen a few meters away from me. A little boy and a woman are in a corridor of what seems to be a school. I was not paying real attention but I noticed the woman crying as she walked away from the boy. The music was cheesy, the acting nauseating and the whole scene hardly mediocre. Then I heard the boy's little Syrian-dubbed* voice which makes the acting look even worse (if that is possible) cry "Mama, don't leave me Mama". But the mother left anyway, abandoning her son standing there in what we understood to be an orphanage (or something like that).

And I burst into tears. It could have been the worst drama for television ever and yet, I cried. This third trimester is making me even more hormonal than usual it seems. I keep crying for nothing. And everything.

* Turkish drama series are currently very popular in the Arab world. The Arabic versions are dubbed in Syria, in modern Syrian dialect and accent.

Things have not been easy these past couple of years. From loosing pregnancies to loosing loved ones, most of whom were way too young to leave, I must say no new year celebration was about to make me perky any more.

It feels like we are just counting the days now. And praying the last tragedy remains exactly that: the last.

Back in college, when I used to feel blue, I would sit on one of the benches facing the nursery in our campus. Children will always warm hearts. They can make you feel good instantly. They can halt time for a little while and turn everything brighter.

Mia has that magical power too. And I am so grateful for her.

But what do you do when pain is so excruciating, it becomes immune, even to the purest magic there is?

I recently learnt a dear friend of mine lost her husband some time in December 2010. It was around the holidays and I had just given birth. Living in different countries did not make it easy keeping in touch at such chaotic times and I am ashamed to say I only heard about her affliction a few weeks ago in the cruelest of accidents. I was greeting her and her family on the holidays, and asked her to pass my sincere regards to her husband.

She would not speak. She simply could not. I had to find out from her sister. And I could not bring myself to ask for details because I knew she was due to give birth around that same time in 2010 and it is very possible her daughter never met her dad. I will probably know soon enough. I am not sure I want to. Not that it would change anything in that little girl's life anyway.

Tragic would be an understatement to describe what happened to this family.

The few words this woman speaks, her silences, everything about her is heartbreaking. She cannot find any meaning in the midst of all this absurdity. She cannot find a reason for her senseless existence. Even though she has three beautiful children, God Bless them. Whom she loves more than life itself. And yet, even a year later, these wonderful blessings cannot begin to fill the void in her heart and her life. She is empty. Simply.

How can she cope?

How can she bring herself to live?

Grieving.

Living.

Nothing makes sense.

And nothing matters, really.

Life is nothing but that fragile tease that we all get stuck with without our consent and which is taken away from us in that same selfish way.

I was always certain the hardest challenge in life was to be able to adjust to the people around us. It turns out, it is even harder to adjust to those who are not there.

And so these days, I have been remembering loved ones. Beautiful souls who departed before their time. Touching lives brought to an end abruptly. Cruelly.

And so these days, I have been crying a little.

So this one is for you... Jeddo, Teta, Sayoudeh, Ziad, Saadeh, Hussam, Fadi, Ghassan, Yasser, Naddouza, Wassim and all the others we were forced to say goodbye to throughout the years.

This one is also for those left behind. Us. Our pain. A friend of mine wrote a beautifully dolorous tribute to her late mother a few days ago. I would like to share it with you here because these days, I feel a little like her. Isn't it ironic how all human beings are equal in suffering?

They say the holidays are the toughest and most depressing times in a year. Apparently it is when sadness manages to take over the most.

It will pass.

Everything passes, eventually.

Opening the Gate

This year, Dubai has seen remarkable Lebanese productions shine at its annual International Film Festival which is wrapping tomorrow, December 14. (Feeling very proud).

And I have had the pleasure of attending the world premiere of Gate #5 by Simon El Habre (I honestly have Ruba & Simon to thank for that).

It is always something special to enjoy documentaries at large venues. It gives me some sense of pride, inside. To be able to sit and watch an unusual and counter-mainstream film, moreover a documentary, at one of the busiest theaters in town; well, it feels good.

And I was not disappointed by the story either. Far from it.

Documentaries are a difficult genre. They do not appeal to all audiences. But lately, there has been a rise of outstanding filmmakers worldwide who are turning this under-appreciated art into what making films is all about: sharing. Sharing with all sorts of people. Sharing with those who never thought they could ever even cross paths. Sharing.

And this is exactly what Simon El Habre did with Gate #5. The inspiration behind this whole project being his own father, and featuring both of them in intimate, yet always beautifully set confessions; it cannot get more "Sharing" than that. In a nutshell, the filmmaker is allowing us inside private family moments.

The rhythm of the film itself slowly becomes orchestrated by this intimacy. At first it is just the heavy breathing of this aging man that resonates like a loud heartbeat in between scenes, subtly underlining the thread that connects all the stories together. And at other times, it is the sound of his dialysis machine, cruelly following that same beat, that sustains this audio-storyline in a smooth, endless continuation. Just like life. Just like the protagonist's life.

But this aging man, sick and yet always optimistic, is nothing but the inspiration behind the documentary. El Habre moves on to expand from that small circle of memories through the Gate that controlled his father's life at one point. A gate that controlled many lives back then. And still does today. Once the Gate opens, the people open up as well. And the story begins. A story of men. A story of Lebanon. And life. A beautiful story.

Yet, it is an unsettling gate that the filmmaker chooses to open in his first scene. The disturbing images of cattle being pushed and shoved out from one narrow box to another, fear and pain overflowing from their eyes as they pass that gate and step onto the truck that will undoubtedly drive them to their end put us all on edge in our comfortable theater seats.

One thing is for sure, El Habre got our attention from the first shot.We knew right then, this would not be a regular film. And although they were selling pop corn and sodas outside, we understood: this was no pop corn movie.

It would not be one of those "tedious" documentaries either. Clearly, the conventional archives, voice over and interview style was as far from us as it could be.

It would be cinematographic instead. The images would speak when the people or the filmmaker could or would not.

Indeed, and moving on from those shocking opening moments, and as if thanking us for being there and attentive, El Habre takes us for a drive on the beautiful mountains of Lebanon, through the powerful eye of cinematographer Bassem Fayad. Almost forgetting we were about to watch a documentary. Simple beauty on a big, big screen. It felt like cinema. It felt like Lebanon. And I missed it so much all of a sudden.

That is probably the key winning touch of this film. It is personal. And it gets personal to the viewers too. Unavoidably.

It is the story of certain men. Yet, all of us can relate.

The story takes place at a certain point in time, and with Lebanon, it usually implies the war will be somewhere in that timeframe. Yet, it is not an narrative recount of those years.

The story happens in old Beirut. Yet, it is not images, and archives, and black and white footage of that era.

(And thank you so much for sparing us those overused and abused videos and photos which are just about everywhere as if every artwork should serve as public service announcement for the ministry of tourism!)

The story is human. And through these humans, we see the past. As it was. Unedited memories of what real life used to be. No voice over. No script. No interview. Just regular, ordinary chats.

These men talk to each other, or the filmmaker, casually. Simply. As if no camera was there. As if they were having one of their daily informal discussions over coffee. Because this is what these men do every day. They remember. They talk. They reminisce about their golden years. That day, they just happened to be recorded while doing so.

We know these men. Not them particularly, but others just like them. That is how we know these moments in the film are genuine. That is how we know this movie speaks a truth. Maybe not the Truth. Maybe some even take pleasure in storytelling and embellishing a little. Just like those other men we know and we have listened to before. At our family dinners. In a cab. At an old coffee shop.

And that is why this film speaks to us. At a personal level.

By the end, I could not help but lean towards my husband and whisper: "you know next time we're in Beirut and you have one of your drinks with your dad, just take the camera and record". He is always saying something. They all are.

And the fact that Gate #5 inspired us to actually pick up a camera and listen is the plain proof that this film works. That it achieved its purpose. That it created something, beyond that theater, even after those end credits rolled on that big screen. That it touched real people. And that it affected real life.

'Tis the Season to be jolly...
And to make a jollier world for those around us.
Especially children.

So today I am adding to my Christmas Wish List a very "Special One": the Children's Cancer Center of Lebanon.

I have nothing but respect and the utmost admiration for the people who work there, and for the Center itself. Its purpose is to provide quality healthcare to children with cancer, completely free of charge. And unlike many (if not all?) other charitable organizations in the country, the Center welcomes patients from all walks of life, and most importantly from all religions.

Every year, the CCCL creates amazing gifts with meaning, and this season is no exception.

Fighting cancer is without a doubt one of the most difficult (and sometimes tragic) battles anyone might have to endure. Like many if not all tragedies, it is not one we choose. But it is not one we can avoid either. It could hit anyone. Sadly, I can attest to that. And to the excessive devastation it leaves behind.

Relatives and friends from all ages have left us too soon. It is in their honor and in the name of those still struggling that I ask you to take the time to support the CCCL in any way or form suitable to you.

I know two children undergoing treatment there. Not because I took the time to volunteer, I only wish. But simply because cancer can indeed hit the people you least expect to be sick. Young, bright, beautiful people. With life and an exciting future ahead. And who suddenly find themselves sinking in pain and battling a war no one, especially not children, should have to fight.

But they do. And with the help of the CCCL, they have a chance. An opportunity to take back what is theirs. To claim back their future. To claim back their lives. To survive and go on.

I also know for a fact that treatment at the CCCL is completely free of charge for all, which makes our support all the more important and consequential.

So please, take the time to check the Helping Hands Friendship Band collection and I am certain you will agree it is indeed a meaningful gesture that combines both the spirit of the CCCL and beauty. But more significantly, it is an immediate action in support of children in need.

I have already gotten one from a previous year's collection and I can assure you it puts a warm smile on the face of the person who receives it. Not only was it a lovely gift to wear but it also meant a donation was made in her name and she contributed in some way, no matter how small.

Christmas shopping list?

Let's face it: shopping for the holidays is always a bitch! Actually, shopping for any occasion, any time of the year is definitely not the most entertaining activity.

And here we go again, for a winter filled with events! I never know what to get and the fact that I start looking just a few days before Christmas certainly does not help my quest.

So this year, let's try and plan ahead, shall we?

I was inspired by Lorena's Epiphany's different Christmas which encourages everyone to support local artists and artisans this holiday, instead of buying from big corporations. I usually buy some gifts from charities too and I'll keep you posted on that as well in another article. In the meantime...

Earlier, on this very space, we have had the fantastic opportunity to meet new talents, so why not take advantage of their unique creations which promise to dazzle the toughest of gift critics!

I cannot help but think of Bras for a Cause first since it is the event that introduced us to fantastic designers and hopeful creators this year. So get some fabulous and glamorous FOR HER, all the while helping a great cause. As a daughter, sister and more recently wife, I attest that shopping FOR HIM is a nightmare! He usually has a zillion ties, wallets, pens and watches and to make things worse, he buys his own gadgets all year long which means that we end up with no wish list by the time the festivities have arrived.

But how about personalizing a favorite piece of his or even better, creating and entirely new one? And what could be better than a piece of wood? Wood is tough, rough and raw. Just like HIM. On the other hand, some things are made to please instantly. I am not saying you will not remember them forever, far from it. However, there is something special in turning a regular everyday moment into magic. And I think everyone can agree chocolate will do that for you. Usually men gift chocolate to ladies but let's face it, when we are dealing with delicacies like Hala Khodary's Chocolat Fée, then trust me both HER and HIM will be delighted by this sweetness in a box which incidentally can also be handmade and customized by Dyala Khodary.

Fashion label Benetton has launched its UNHATE campaign and as expected, the controversial subject is making headlines.

You can watch the film and download it along with the banners from their UNHATE Foundation website:

The campaign features prominent international figures and politicians, calling them to unhate.

Considering the political climate in Lebanon, it is not surprising Made In Lebanon mimics of the campaign quickly emerged:

The Lebanese online community has been upset over the discovery of the first Phoenician port in Mina El-Hosn under a construction site owned by Venus Real Estate Development in downtown Beirut. It appears this major historical finding cannot be saved. Like many of the ancient sites uncovered in that area, it will probably disappear under the wonderful face of modernity and "reconstruction".

Now we go ... to the movies

As you already know we've managed to squeeze an evening at the movies when hubby was here. I'm not going to get into the whole "Parents Vs. Movies" debate. It's a loosing battle. The purpose of this post is not to rant anyway (thank God!) but rather share one interesting and moving evening with all of you.

I couldn't ignore the nominations, awards and praises bestowed upon this piece and the artist behind it, which all speak for themselves, and loud enough might I add and which left me with the highest of expectations.

To be honest I refrained from reading anything because I intended to experience the film with a fresh eye. And I'll grant you that same courtesy, don't worry. Which means I won't bore you with my critique of the movie. There's a plethora of very pertinent (I'm sure) reviews out there on the net.

So why even write this post, you may ask?

Well first of all, to tell those two or three people who haven't yet watched "Where Do We Go Now?" to make the time. For a very simple reason: it is a simple, beautiful, sensual and genuine poem on Lebanon.

If this film were a woman, it would be Nadine Labaki, simply. And just as a quick reminder for those who may not know or have forgotten, here's what the woman looks like. Convinced yet?

If not, let me just add the following...

"Where Do We Go Now?" tackles issues that are still relevant to our people, our nation and probably the entire Arab world today more than ever.

But it is also and above all an ode to Humanity. Mankind.

And probably the most flattering compliment to religions and faith. The true value and intent of religions and faith: Love.

Nadine Labaki makes a commendable effort to shed light on human relationships, how easily ignorance and fear can turn the kindest and the closest of human beings into mortal enemies and most importantly how when we focus on the truth and tolerance, life wins. Because there is no escaping death. So the lesson undeniably remains life, the great measure it takes when faced with the end, and by extension, what we should do with it.

As with "Caramel", the cinematography is wonderful. Beauty is everywhere even in the simplest, poorest or sickest of places. Even in death. And the music, which becomes a character in its own right, is absolutely perfect. The poetry it brings is so intrinsic to the characters, the places and the story that it doesn't feel like an artistic addition. It is simply a part of life. A natural element of reality.

Everyone should take a glance at that reality. At beauty. And at love.

The promise was kept: I laughed. I cried. And days later, I find myself still immersed in that universe which is really only an innocent wish for a better world. The desire. The hope. The humble prayer of a people who have nothing else to lose and everything to win.

Film Quotes

And I don't mean from the movies.

I mean at the movies.

I have to start with a shocking observation: Dunes looks like a nursery. An overcrowded playground at best. Indoors. With echo. Lots and lots of echo. ow. oww. owwwwww.

It's always scary being surrounded by an army of 15 year olds. They are loud. They push. And worst of all, they giggle. All the time. Oh Lord, the giggling. It can scare the fiercest of us.

At first I was shocked. Where did all these kids come from? I'm never surprised meeting them at Concorde, but I always remembered Dunes as being for "the grown ups". Then it hit me: I too was 15 when I first started to hang there!

As you can imagine, the scariest reality bite (even more frightening than a 15 year old giggling) took over: They are not too young to be there, I AM FREAKING OLD.

To be completely fair, the indoors pony rides might not have helped the whole situation. Yes, they have ponies indoors now.

Rest assured, they are mechanical ponies and not intended for the cool 15 year olds. But it means that now, Dunes is also a fav' hang out for those 3 year olds and up!

They even have a specialized one-stop-shop that creates activities, birthdays and whatnot just for them! I must mention the teddy bears horror show which they also provide. You start by searching three huge bins for your favorite "empty" shell of a teddy bear which looks, well, dead. Skinned to be precise. Then, a nice man will fill it up with... filling stuff. And here you go, your brand new resuscitated BFF. Stuffed. In front of you. Gives a whole new meaning to the words "stuffed toys". Enough to give those kids a lifetime of nightmares and provide a sustainable market for all those shrinks out there, for an entire century!

But I digress, so let's leave the youngest and their dead toys alone and go back to the subject of this post: Quotes, Or The Amazing Movie Theaters Things.

Story 1:

Unlike common practices in other countries, in Lebanon you have the opportunity to select the seats of your preference as you buy your tickets. It's not on a first come first seated basis and it can be nice considering how close the screen is to those first 10 rows! So we arrived 45 minutes early to purchase our tickets and ended up finding a full house (very happy to see that considering I am a fan of the movie, but that's for another post). Seeing as there was only two of us, we could manage to find a couple of seats on a decent row, somewhere in the middle of the theater. And luckily enough, they were the first two seats.

Then the waiting began. We killed our pop corn way before we made it to the movie, and just walked around the (really tiny) place watching little kids in cow boys hats, riding teeny weeny ponies on wheels. Cute, I must admit. I immediately jumped to imagining Mia on one of those. Priceless!

About 20 minutes before the show, we got in front of the theater door and decided to wait there so we could enter immediately as my pregnant back was starting to kill me. I was really itching to ask the ushers to let me in so I could rest but I refrained. After all, everybody had to wait and a few minutes weren't going to change the course of my world. And anyway, we all know no one's allowed in while the cleaning crew's at work.

Slowly, more people started to gather around us, and these days, I'm becoming a little claustrophobic, especially with all the winter germs and people coughing and sneezing. Make it a crowd of 15 year olds coughing and sneezing and you have the perfect recipe for a panic attack.

But I kept my cool somehow (surprisingly).

Then, super hunky boys dying to impress sexy girlfriends started to go in the theater, one after the next. And one after the next, they were asked to get out.

But we weren't really surprised. We were actually waiting to see when the dance would start. Because it's a rule. It's absolutely not possible in this country to go to the movies and not find at least one or two smart asses trying to sneak in before the opening time.

About 5 minutes before the doors opened, the head of ushers came to me and said "You look exhausted. We have a special case here, Ali, take the lady to her seat".

I was shocked. So kind and helpful!

Of course, one of the 15 year old cool boys didn't like it and made a smart comment. I didn't hear what exactly but I know the usher looked at him and said "What? You too? Not comfortable enough? Do you also need to rest?" Needless to say he didn't impress his girlfriend much, trying to compete with an old pregnant lady!

Story 2:

Two women got in and the usher directed them to their seats. We didn't really notice where but we know they decided to ignore him and sit on the row right in front of ours:

Woman 1: Let's sit here.

Woman 2: These are not our seats.

Woman 1: It's OK, we'll pretend we didn't know and if someone comes and requests these seats, we'll go back to ours .

Hmmm.... No comment.

The usher who came back was not as comment-free:

Usher: "These are not your seats.

Woman 1: We'll sit here for now. If someone comes and requests the seats, we'll move.

Usher: Someone will come.

Woman 1: Are you certain?

Usher: Yes, someone will come. Return to your seats.

(No please, no thank you. Made my day!)

And as they walked to their assigned seats,

Woman 1: Julie made the reservations. She chose those seats.

I was waiting for Julie to come and get an earful from that charming lady but it appears poor Julie is some kind of personal assistant or something because she never made it to the theater.

Those two sophisticated film lovers on the other hand, did make it to the seats... right next to ours!

I could not believe my eyes. Why make all this fuss if it is to sit in the immediate next row?! I thought they were somewhere down the theater, stuck in front of the screen! Well, no.

Now brace yourself for what's coming next.

Don't say I didn't warn you.

Because it's going to hit you like a bomb.

Wait for it.

Here it comes:

Woman 1: Pfff. We're used to VIP seats in Dubai, now we have to settle for these?

Ok bitch! You no likey? You leave. God knows I could have made it without your stinky perfume that got me sneezing the second you passed in front of me!

Ahhh, the movies right before the actual movie: always the best shows ;)

Très peu de Libanais ont appris au début de la belle saison, de sources médiatiques, qu’un port phénicien a été découvert dans la région de Minet-el-Hosn au centre-ville de Beyrouth, dans le terrain 1398, situé derrière l’Hôtel Monroe. De telles d’informations dans notre cher pays des cèdres passent – si elles sont toutefois divulguées – quasi inaperçues, et ceci pour plusieurs raisons : citons entre autres l’absence d’intérêt aux nouvelles d’ordre culturel, historique et archéologique, de la part du public comme des médias, et notamment, depuis la genèse de la catastrophe nommée Solidère et consort, raz-de-marée progressif et ravageur faisant écho au tsunami (naturel) destructeur de 552.

Il est quand même passionnant de savoir qu’il existe encore des spécialistes qui entreprennent des fouilles et qui déterrent des trésors archéologiques dans ce minuscule pays, à une époque où le patrimoine est incessamment enterré par la décadence et la nescience. Cependant, l’histoire au Liban nous a habitués à ce que les réjouissances suscitées par de tels évènements soient promptement étouffés par les « briseurs de rêves » déterministes et mercenaires.

En effet, une agence immobilière dénommée « Venus Real Estate Development Co. » souhaite ériger trois grandes tours sur le terrain 1398, projet qui s’étendrait sur 7510 m², et dont les frais s’élèvent à 500 millions de dollars américains(1). Bref, un projet titanesque dans lequel un nombre ridicule de Libanais serait à même de se payer un appartement (dont la surface varierait entre 250 et 650 m² en plein cœur de la capitale où les prix sont inimaginables).

Depuis plus de cinq mois, une équipe de la DGA, dirigée par l’expert Hicham Sayegh, suite à des fouilles dans la région, a effectué moult découvertes archéologiques considérables dans la capitale, dont deux canaux parallèles creusés dans le roc, qui font partie du port Phénicien du Vème siècle av. J.C., d’où le nom de Minet el Hosn (Port du Krak, de la forteresse). Il est judicieux de préciser qu’une telle découverte met l’accent sur le rôle phare du port de Beyrouth durant l’ère phénicienne et romaine.

Cependant, les archéologues ne sont pas tous d’accord sur la datation de ce site. Selon les quotidiens libanais An-Nahar(2) et Al-Akhbar(3), la majorité atteste l’hypothèse avancée par Sayegh, dont Martine Francis-Allouch, archéologue terrestre et sous-marine, Eric Gottwalles, spécialiste en archéologie marine, Janine Abdelmassih, archéologue et conservatrice, Anis Chaaya, chercheur en archéologie médiévale, et une archéologue de l’université roumaine de Jasi. La conservatrice du musée archéologique de l’AUB, Leila Badr, affirme ne pas avoir vu ce port, mais indique qu’il est toujours interdit au public ainsi qu’aux archéologues de visiter tout site découvert au Centre-ville de Beyrouth. Le principal archéologue qui réfuterait l’hypothèse de Sayegh est Hans Corverz, connu dans les sphères archéologiques pour sa « loyauté » aux entrepreneurs de Venus Real Estate, ainsi que Solidère et consort. Petite piqûre de rappel, Hans Corverz est conseiller chez Solidère, et a dirigé une centaine de fouilles qui n’ont été ni préservées, ni archivées, ni publiées.

Venus Real Estate s’appuie sur le constat de Corverz pour dépouiller son terrain de toute valeur historique et archéologique, afin de poursuivre son chantier promoteur de la civilisation du béton. Le député et chef du PSP Walid Joumblatt avait indiqué, suite aux rapports de Venus Real Estate, que ces déclarations sont futiles et qu’ils (VRE) seraient prêts à tout et n’importe quoi pour avoir la main sur quelques mètres carrés de plus.

Sur le plan politique, Salim Wardé, alors ministre de la Culture, avait classé une partie de ce terrain sur la Liste Officielle Libanaise des Monuments Classés et Inscrits Monuments Historiques et Sites, et déclaré le 4 avril dernier qu’il est interdit d’effectuer tout chantier ou travaux sur ce terrain sans l’accord de la DGA qui y est tenue de contrôler tout projet, ainsi que les matériaux utilisés pour la construction. Cependant, profitant de la période transitoire avec le changement gouvernemental, et dès l’avènement de Gaby Layoun à la tête du ministère de la Culture, Venus Real Estate a dépêché un document à Layoun proposant le déplacement de la totalité des blocs de pierres formant le port phénicien afin de les mettre dans les jardins du futur projet, précisant que ces blocs devraient être coupés afin d’atteindre un poids variant entre 5 et 8 tonnes pour faciliter leur transfert vers les espaces verts du projet. Ils proposent même d’organiser une cérémonie parrainée par le ministre de la Culture au cours de laquelle il mettrait l’accent sur « l’importance historique » de ces (débris de) pierres … coupées.

Récemment, la banque Al Mawarid (4), a annoncé avoir conclu un accord de syndication avec quatre banques libanaises afin de financer l’agence immobilière Venus Real Estate. Dans le cadre d’une cérémonie tenue à l’Hotel 4 Seasons à Beyrouth le 26 octobre, la banque Al-Mawarid, Jammal Trust Bank, la Banque Libano-Suisse, la Fenicia Bank et la First National Bank, ont consenti un prêt de 28,000,000 de dollars américains à la VRE, estimant qu’une telle initiative aurait pour but de promouvoir le secteur financier au Liban, et solliciterait d’avantage d’entreprises et d’investisseurs à participer activement à la croissance économique du pays. Vive l’économie et les carnages culturels si les choses seraient ainsi …

A l’heure actuelle, le ministre Layoun a démenti les propos diffusés par certains médias affirmant qu’il aurait donné son aval sur le projet suggéré par Venus Real Estate, et a indiqué qu’un comité formé des experts Albert Naccach, Samir Chami, et Hassân Sarkis, devrait prochainement se prononcer sur la datation du site en question.

Dans l’espoir que ce premier port phénicien découvert à Beyrouth ne subisse par le sort des centaines de découvertes archéologiques détruites par les bulldozers ou enfouies à jamais sous des tonnes de bétons pour l’édification par Solidère et consort de centres commerciaux et de tours résidentielles hors de prix qui seront tous achetés et habités par des groupes ou particuliers étrangers notamment du pays du Golfe, nous ne pouvons que lancer un appel pour la sensibilisation des Libanais et Libanaises pour la sauvegarde de leur patrimoine historique et culturel gravement en péril, et les susciter à développer leur mémoire connue pour être excessivement courte afin de suivre toute affaire de ce genre et d’exiger de leurs représentants au sein de l’Etat des comptes et des rapports scientifiques et précis, ce qui limiterait en partie, les atrocités, le vandalisme et les crimes contre leur patrimoine national.

It's a wrap!

Bras for a Cause Middle East held two major events in Beirut and Dubai and showcased the fabulous creations that were submitted for this one of a kind competition in the Arab world.

It was amazing to see the sketches coming to life on the runway....

Of course in my case, I wish I could have attended at least one of the events live. Instead, I've had to settle for whatever I could find on the net.

I was looking forward to the Beirut show and was so excited to be in town at the time. Unfortunately, I couldn't get out of the house due to some difficulties with my pregnancy. Everything is OK, but at the time, I couldn't stand straight... Let's leave it to that (now is not the time to rant).

So I started counting the days to Dubai's Edition of BFAC. Again, pregnancy strikes and wins. I could not travel. I still am stuck in Beirut, weeping at my laptop screen!

If like me, you're still craving for some pink glitter by the fabulous and sexy squad, fear not.

Last night, Bras for a Cause's winners were finally revealed!

I honestly believed all entries were deserving of this worthy competition, and most of them were even outstanding. It was hard to believe some of the contestants were first time designers!

So naturally, congratulations were in order :)

Describe your design style in three words.

Blossoming, alive and artistic.

Tell us a little bit about your creative process: how long did it take for you to create the design, what inspires you, how do you choose colors, fabrics, themes?

To be frank, ideas do not need time to come up to our minds, when I read about the competition, the Bra blossoming flower came up to my mind quickly and then I sketched it, colors it and scanned it with a little bit of processing on Adobe Photoshop.

What did you design, a bra or a t-shirt?

A t-shirt.

Why did you decide to participate?

Because hoping and fighting are the best ways to conquer the world.

What role do you think fashion can play in the fight against cancer and empowering cancer survivors?

Fashion is always hopeful for women in all cases and at any time.

What are your expectations and hopes for this event?

What’s your design background?

No design background, but I have always been interested in fashion as a form of art and expression.

Describe yourself in three words.

It’s better to ask those around me (laughs).

Who’s your favorite designer?

There are too many to choose from. I love old classic styles as seen on Jackie Kennedy, Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn. I appreciate more modern creations by YSL, Dior, and Vera Wang. I love Middle Eastern designers such as Elie Saab and Zuhair Murad. But it always comes back to the classics like Chanel. You cannot go wrong with Chanel. It’s a wardrobe staple for every woman.

What kind of music inspires you?

I think you can find inspiration in every kind of music. It depends on the mood you’re in. Music has this amazing ability to enhance moods and open up your mind.

What’s your favorite movie?

I can’t choose! Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Casablanca, Rebel Without a Cause, A Street Car Named Desire, Chocolat, ET, The Godfather, have I said Casablanca already? (laughs). The list goes on. I’m currently having a love affair with foreign films. I can’t get enough.

What is your profession and why did you choose to participate in this competition?

I actually have a degree in journalism and I’m currently working on a project which is aimed at fashion in the Middle East and North Africa. It’s such a big industry and these places are slowly beginning to take their place and make their presence felt on the international scale. It’s an exciting time to be in the design world.

I wanted to participate in this competition because I have always been fascinated by the design aspect of fashion. And this is such a good cause. You have to really think about these women who have and are going through breast cancer and how much difference a garment like a bra can impact on their health and with their confidence. It’s such an important cause, one that I think everyone should get involved with because I have learnt things about breast cancer I never knew before.

❝ I’ve spoken to some women who said they felt less womanly after their battle, especially those involving surgery to remove the parts with cancer. I wanted to restore that confidence back. They might never be the same again, but they can make themselves better, greater and stronger. ❞

THE DESIGN

Describe your design style in three words.

Vintage, classic, comfortable.

What did you design, a bra or a t-shirt?

I designed a bra.

What inspired your design?

Old school vintage style from the Hollywood and European golden era.

Tell us a little bit about your creative process: how long did it take for you to create the design, what inspires you, how do you choose colors, fabrics, themes?

I've been working on it for a couple of weeks now. I spent a long time looking through old magazines, films; costumes etc to get a feel of something truly feminine and classic. Then it was a matter of looking at how to merge those ideas with something that would also be comfortable, secure and be able to give its wear a feeling of confidence and femininity. I think the concept of making these women still feel feminine was key for me. I’ve spoken to some women who said they felt less womanly after their battle, especially those involving surgery to remove the parts with cancer. I wanted to restore that confidence back. They might never be the same again, but they can make themselves better, greater and stronger. That’s important to cancer survivors.

Choosing colours was so difficult! But I think I picked the right one in the end….hopefully (fingers crossed) (laughs). On the other hand choosing fabrics was amazing!!! I wanted everything from silks, satin’s organza detailing; some chiffon…the list goes on. I went to a top fabric store here in London and went insane wanting everything (laughs). But at the end of the day, I had to focus on how the material would feel against the skin, especially those who’ve had surgery. Your body, especially the skin, would be sensitive. It was important to recreate a sensation against the skin that is soothing, comfortable, luxurious, and fresh. This part was such an important area for me because in researching what survivors have said themselves, I learnt things I didn’t know before. And all of that knowledge helps you in the actual design process. It makes you consider if you really should have this here or there, and how would that feel as well as look if we tried to create this shape or that etc. I was seriously humbled by what these women had gone through. It motivates you to make something special.

THE EVENT

Why did you decide to participate?

It’s such an important cause. People need to become more aware of its signs and how to get better and all the stages in between.

What role do you think fashion can play in the fight against cancer and empowering cancer survivors?

It can empower cancer victims and survivors alike to express themselves artistically. Sometimes its difficult to say what you mean, and fashion is one of the greatest forms of art expression. It also has a global reach.

What are your expectations and hopes for this event?

That people learn things they didn’t know. That money can be raised for an important cause and those affected in any way, shape or form by cancer learn that they are not alone; there are people out there who are willing to help them.

So there you have it. Two very different young women, just like all the other designers who participated in making this event a great success, all with one thing in common:

The commitment to raise awareness for the fight against breast cancer.

A disease that could affect anyone. A disease that can be defeated through widespread awareness as early detection is key in saving lives.

And that is why it is so important for all of us to get involved and actively support campaigns such as Bras for a Cause.

That's it. It's the final countdown for all of us at the Bras for a Cause Squad, and that means you too:

Who knows. It doesn't matter. What matters is that now is the time. You have until July 12. Yes. That leaves only three days to make sure you've supported your favorite design(s). Yes, you can vote for as many pieces as you'd like, in all categories. So, go nuts!

Then it will be the judges's turn to make their move: they are entrusted with the difficult job of selecting the winners who will be revealed on July 14.

And I don't envy them right now!

Judges, I sympathize, believe me and I wish you the best of luck with that heavy responsibility.

As for humble me, I was asked to represent one design from either Her Bra, Training Bra or Such a Tee's categories.

I immediately stepped away from all the t-shirts because for one, I have three designs there (curious readers out there, check here, here and here, and click on "Like" while you're at it, thank you very much in advance) but mostly because two of my friends are participating too (find their amazing work here and here and don't forget to "Like" please) and I didn't want to have to choose between them.

The next step came almost naturally.

I simply asked myself, "If I were at a lingerie boutique, which bra would I buy"?

And without a moment of hesitation, I immediately clicked on Cupcake Fantasy by Yasmin Khlaifat.

First of all, it has a pastry name. That can only be a good sign. It is inspired by the layering of cupcakes which I find so tasteful (pun intended) but more importantly it is one of the very few sexy full bras I've seen. Ever. And I've looked, trust me.

Cupcake Fantasy

It is glamorously shaped, yet maintaining that practicality fully busted women like myself always look for.

I should have probably started by mentioning that finding the right bra has always been a challenge for me. I am always stuck between "something that can support all that (overweight) baggage I carry all day" or something "cute and sexy". Why it is so difficult to find both in one design, I'll never know.

Well, this one's a winner!

It is sensual and feminine but also comfortable. The large shoulder straps will definitely carry any weight without marking my skin with that awful red scar I get every time I wear thin laces. And clearly, the breasts will be fully supported all the while looking so darn cute!

Cupcake Fantasy

The back looks as convenient as the front: large enough for good support but also to avoid those ugly excess fat most bras will shape on the side. Love handles may be cute around the waistline, they are a definite no-no on the back! And just look at that charming design! The back is as lovely and sexy as the front.

Beautiful and convenient.

Comfortable and flattering.

If that doesn't make any woman, a fortiori full-figured ones like me, happy; I don't know what will.

Bottom line: This is pretty and wearable and I want it now!

June 30 being the last day to submit your entries to Bras for a Cause, it may be interesting to have a look at those unknown designers who have already made the jump and sent their work. They're not big fashion names. They may not even be from the fashion industry altogether, but one thing is for sure: they care and they are here to lend support to a cause close to our hearts.

One of these outstanding talents is 17 years old Hasleen Anand. Yes, 17 and already on the path to doing great things, I can tell. And this is all I wish for her at the very least. She took the time to answer a few questions about her hopes, aspirations and Bras for a Cause.

In a nutshell: she did not disappoint and raised those expectations just a little bit higher. Clearly, that remarkable spirit that characterizes the event's professional designers is intrinsic to all participants, in all categories.

No design background, just have a passion for fashion designing.

I do not have a favorite designer as such but I do admire the work of certain designers like Versace etc.

What kind of music inspires you?
Mostly depends on my mood, but always ready for pop or something that's calm and relaxing.

What’s your favorite movie?
Ooh many favorites, but here are a few- The Devil Wears Prada, Flight Plan and The Tourist.

If you hadn’t been a designer, what profession would you have chosen? If you’re not a designer, what is your current job and why did you choose to participate in this competition?
I am a student who's going to start with University for fashion designing, as I not only love everything about fashion but also want to pursue a career in the fashion world. I love designing in my free time so why not do it for a great cause :)

Tell us a little bit about your creative process: how long did it take for you to create the design, what inspires you, how do you choose colors, fabrics, themes?
It took me around 10 days to complete everything. I love art and everything about fashion and my choice of going ahead in this field of design as my career has inspired me a lot. Whereas for choosing colors, I combine different colors and always try to bring out different shades, to make the theme I have chosen stand out.

Why did you decide to participate?
The love of designing and creativity helped me to be a part of this cause. When i heard about this, it wasn't only something new to me but something I would love to be a part of, hence giving me the opportunity to do something for a cause where you are not only having fun but being helpful. There were no reasons for why I shouldn't participate :)

What did you design, a bra or a t-shirt?
I designed two bras for two different categories and 1 T-shirt as well.

What inspired your design?
My inspiration was the season spring/summer itself, which gave me ideas of floral patterns and bright colors that I have used and of course the crusade against breast cancer.

What role do you think fashion can play in the fight against cancer and empowering cancer survivors?
Bringing about awareness through fashion will not only bring the difficulties of this disease into the limelight but also fetch support for the fight against it when associated with famous brands.

What are your expectations and hopes for this event?
I think this is a great event and more such events should be planned, they not only help to support the fight against cancer but also bring out many budding designers into the limelight.

Every time I hear the word "kitsch" I get all excited! Yes, I'm that weird 30-something who's hung up on her music from the 80's, who can't resist checking up on some old flames (right!) like Saved By The Bell's Mark-Paul Gosselaar and who just wishes she could go back to the good old days, minus the horrific hairstyles (God that was bad) and the pimples.

So when I got to Alison and Marie's interview, I thought this is it; kitsch and chic all at once: let's bag this! Literally.

These two cousins' first collection is a blend of Dubai's culture where they were raised, with vibrant colors all wrapped in unique classic clutches. And I'm not being cavalier with the word "unique"; each piece is hand-made and each design is limited to two pieces only. Now if that doesn't make a girl feel special, I don't know what does!

This particular collection is inspired by the Hand of Fatima and the Evil Eye which developed from being simple ornaments on a purse to becoming the clutch itself.

And these creations are as unusual and charming as this pair of designers. Indeed, when you get answers like "Child-Woman/Drama Queen" and "Artist/Thinker" to the same question you know you're up for a special ride. And the story even gets better when you discover what's underneath these answers: two talented ladies with a big heart.

Tell us a little bit about your creative process: how long does it take for you to create a new collection, what inspires you, how do you choose colors, fabrics, themes?

The entire process takes anywhere from 2-3 months. We do everything together...inspirational travelling, designing, brainstorming, putting our thoughts to paper and finally into production. We use the color trends for the upcoming seasons as inspirational guidelines. Our themes are usually around ideas we believe in and love ourselves. Our creations are things we adore in conjunction with fantasy.

The Event: Bras for a Cause Middle East

Why did you decide to participate?

It’s for a cause that is close to our hearts. My dearest friend is a 'Survivor', a fighter; she is an inspiration to many women, and not just Cancer patients but regular women like you and me that there is always light at the end of the tunnel. Most often it’s a beautiful blue sky with the most fabulous rainbow!

What did you design, a bra or a t-shirt?

Both! :)

What inspired your design?

T Shirt – We were inspired by the fight that all the survivors have endured. The angel wings are also a symbol of respect for all the great individuals who lost the battle of Breast Cancer.
Bra – The design is vintage incorporating the Alison and Marie lace. The color theme which is a variant of crystals from dark to light metallic tones. The shades form dark to light is significant of coming out of the dark towards the light of hope – survival.
We used our trademark crystals and embellishments, as every woman should look fabulous!

Did you take a different approach when designing for cancer survivors (or their supporters) or did you consider them as any other client?

Whilst designing for a survivor/supporter/patient we keep several things in mind:
-They must feel special whilst they wear our t shirt/bra, as they are fighters of a disease/cause. Angels of hope admired by many.
- Every woman wants to be told and feel that she is beautiful. We want them to feel even more beautiful whilst wearing our t-shirt and bra. Unfortunately the survivors of today are limited to beautiful lingerie. We wanted to give them a different option. It was all made with extra care, love and hope.
-Comfort was a very important factor.

What role do you think fashion can play in the fight against cancer and empowering cancer survivors?

It is awareness of the cause. Designers are creators. We are creating for a good cause, to make every survivor even more beautiful than she is!

How do you view the Middle East as a fashion platform and audience to your creative vision?

The ME fashion culture is one of the most emerging and developing at the moment. Middle Eastern designers today are the most sought after and coveted world over. The women in this region take risks with fashion and convert those risks into trends all over the globe. It is slowly becoming the center of the fashion world. We are honored to be in the heart of it all!

Is this event the first time you present your work to Arab audiences? If yes, then what are your expectations and hopes with this first-time participation?

YES. We hope that this participation is a stepping stone to the bigger picture. It is a great opportunity to meet other creative individuals in the industry and celebrate this good cause together. We hope that our creations are appreciated and enjoyed by all.

As you know, there is a category for aspiring designers in the competition. How would you like to inspire young designers through your participation in Bras for a Cause?

We would like to inspire young designers by reminding them to Reach for the Stars! They will make it :)

Bras for a Cause is a charity event, and by nature, it calls for the humane, kind and generous side of us. It is without a doubt the perfect platform for Rana Mouawad, the founder and creative brain behind Maison Rana, a label resulting from the fusion between art and fashion.

The term Maison in French translates to "house" but can also mean "home". And this is what Maison Rana is in essence, a home. A home for artists to shine and grow. Many! I love weird cuts, and I love a story behind a dress… in love with the work of Ralph Rucci, Alexander McQueen, Karen Karam, to name a few.

What kind of music inspires you?

Depending on the mood. Recently, I’ve been listening to Classics and Jazz.

What’s your favorite movie?

Many again! Sorry for that, but I love movies and watch a lot of them during the week, especially international ones! The Godfather, City of God (Brazilian Movie), The Circle (Persian Movie), No Man’s Land (Serbian Movie), and I love the work of Mahmoud Kaabour, and his recent documentary Teta Alf Marra.. Absolutely fabulous! .

If you hadn’t been a designer, what profession would you have chosen?

I am very lucky that I have already worked in the profession that I love which is advertising, marketing and communication. It gives you a great perspective on brands, image and production. Now, I am living my other passion that is fashion.

Tell us a little bit about your creative process: how long does it take for you to create a new collection, what inspires you, how do you choose colors, fabrics, themes?

Every collection in Maison Rana is inspired by art or culture (the art could be a painting or sculpture or photography, etc.). I try to translate the artist’s work and what I love about it or the city I visited and its beautiful culture into the designs, be it in cuts, draping and color palette. It takes me months to come up with a new collection, so I always try to multitask and work couple of collections at the same time, to give each collection the time I need for it. Insane but never been happier in my life.

Why did you decide to participate?

The cause hits home for me.. I had few family members who battled breast cancer and I am blessed that they won the battle. I really believe that women are not powerless and we will win against this, by loving, supporting and helping each other.

What did you design, a bra or a t-shirt?

Couple of T-Shirts.

What inspired your design?

One is about super power. The other is just another way of expressing the support outside the boundaries of the pink ribbon or the pink bracelet.

Did you take a different approach when designing for cancer survivors (or their supporters) or did you consider them as any other client?

Not really, I wanted to design something for the cause of course, and to translate the message on a t-shirt…but I always had in-mind the style aspect. I wanted to make sure that the result is something that women would buy for both the support of the cause and also because it is something stylish and they would wear. I wanted to make sure it is an addition to their wardrobe, and not just a timely purchase that will be given away… (Basically making sure it doesn’t look like a promotional t-shirt)...

What role do you think fashion can play in the fight against cancer and empowering cancer survivors?

Fashion can do a lot… in addition to financial support, the empowerment comes from having these survivors always in-mind, and so altering some designs to make it comfortable for the survivors to enjoy as well.

How do you view the Middle East as a fashion platform and audience to your creative vision?

The Middle Eastern woman is very stylish and fashionable. I strongly believe that. However, there are some women who are still battling to find their sense of style, and therefore resolve to copy. I believe that my audiences are women who love to experiment, believe in culture and art, and interested in knowing the story behind what they are wearing.

Is this event the first time you present your work to Arab audiences? If yes, then what are your expectations and hopes with this first-time participation?

This is the first time I participate in a competition. I honestly have no expectations because I am participating to support the cause, and not to ensure a win. I am here because I hope that a competition like this can start a movement (at least in the ME) to push us as designers and buyers for boutiques to consider collections or designs for survivors of cancer, and to push the envelope on Breast cancer support, finding a cure, pushing early check-ups and importantly eliminating the stigma of thinking of death or of body scarring when it comes to this disease.

As you know, there is a category for aspiring designers in the competition. How would you like to inspire young designers through your participation in Bras for a Cause?

I hope that through my participation, aspiring designers see that it is important to support something they truly relate to or believe in, not only for the design aspect, but also for them as individuals… to give back to their community through something they are good in. It is a great opportunity to pay it forward, as they say.

When we think "Fashion" our minds immediately jump to "clothing". That's the first thing we think about. And then, for some unknown reason, at least in the case of us women, it takes us about five little seconds to shift to accessories. I will not dwell on the rationale behind that mysterious thinking course, but needless to say I was excited to see Bras for a Cause, just like any refined woman, rallying designers from all walks of Fashion.

It will be really interesting to see how each artist, depending on their line of work, expertise and backgrounds, approaches the challenge. After all, even when it comes to apparels, few labels do lingerie.

Naturally, when I heard über chic Angelique Sabounjian was on board for both a Bra and a T-shirt design, I could not help but be a little intrigued. Pleasantly intrigued, that is. At the end of the day, her elegant label Tasché does offer the finest leather handbags and accessories, but lingerie and clothing remain unusual creations for her.

Each collection takes around 1 to 2 months, and I’m inspired by my daily life, everything that surrounds me, people, friends, music, art, architecture, food, books, magazines, movies, and the list is long. I choose the fabrics & colors according to my inspirations. I don’t like to follow a certain trend. Each phase of my life has inspired each of my collections.

What inspired your design?

The bra’s design was inspired by my handbag designs mixed with an 80’s era style and Jean Paul Gautier’s bra for Madonna.

I designed the piece that is easy to use both for cancer survivors and non-cancer fighters.

What role do you think fashion can play in the fight against cancer and empowering cancer survivors?

First of all since most women are interested in fashion it can get through to them more easily and second it empowers cancer survivors by not making them feel like their left out of fashion.

How do you view the Middle East as a fashion platform and audience to your creative vision?

In my opinion it is the place to be a fashion designer because talent and appreciation is at its peak. I’m constantly amazed to see all this talent and creativity in the Middle East it is so inspiring to me hence, for me it’s a way of giving back what I’ve been offered and ‘touched’ by.

Is this event the first time you present your work to Arab audiences? If yes, then what are your expectations and hopes with this first-time participation?

Some of my designs have been displayed in the UAE at Sauce and on Aura B. In KSA and Kuwait, they have been presented to private sales and events. My previous experiences were very positive and welcoming. Bras for a Cause stands out to me personally because it’s dear to my heart and it’s not just a fashion event.

It’s an honor for me to be able to inspire young designers, I would want them to believe in themselves and let their creativity spread out.

Of course I would love that, because as I mentioned earlier my past background was product design and for me just to be able to design any type of product is pure pleasure, especially if it was going to help a lot of women.
